How to Add Chlorine to a Pool. The safe way!
Discover the safest methods for adding chlorine to your pool, from granular options to tablets and liquid
One Minute Read Summary
•The ideal chlorine level in a pool is between 1-3 ppm, and at least 3 ppm for spas.
• Before adding any type of chlorine to the pool, it's important to wear safety goggles and thick gloves. If there’s an indoor pool involved, make sure the air is fresh by opening a window or two. Don’t spit it on surfaces.
•Granular chlorine (Cal hypo, dichlor & trichlor) can be added directly into the water after measuring out with care and pre-dissolving it in a bucket with some pool water; never pour undissolved granular chlorines directly into your skimmer!
•Chlorine tablets can be added using either a floating dispenser or an automatic chlorinator
•To add liquid chlorine simply measure how much you need before pouring it around your perimeter while letting your pump circulate it around evenly - preferably during sunset so that UV rays don't affect its effectiveness too much.
•Lastly (and most importantly!) calculate how many gallons your Pool has by multiplying length x width x average depth of your Pool then multiply the result by 7.48.

The ideal Chlorine level in a Pool
The sweet spot is between 1-3 ppm for Pools, and at least 3 ppm for Spas.
Get ready!
Slip on some safety goggles and thick gloves before you dive in! And don’t forget: if there’s an indoor pool involved, make sure the air is fresh by opening a window or two. Don’t spit chlorine on surfaces. It's always better safe than sorry when dealing with chlorine - so get geared up for your chemical adventure!
How to add Powder chlorine in a pool (Granular)
There are different options of granular chlorine (Cal hypo, dichlor, and trichlor) which dissolve rapidly in the water and are ideal for shocking a Pool. Remember that mixing different types together can lead to dangerous results! After choosing which chlorine works for you, measure it out with care before pre-dissolving it in a bucket with pool water. Lastly (and most importantly!), be sure never to pour it directly into the skimmer, only around the perimeter of the pool.
1: Test the water
Determine the chlorine level of your pool water
2: Determine how much chlorine needs to be added
Don't guess, read the label! The instructions will tell you exactly how much chlorine to add depending on your pool's water volume and chlorine level, to know how to calculate your pool volume read below.
3: Prepare a bucket
Grab a bucket and dip it into the pool to collect water, and fill it up about 60-80%.
4: Dissolve
Then carefully add the measured amount of chlorine to the bucket with pool water and Stir away (you can use a stick, not your hand). Make sure to dissolve that powder; ever pour undissolved chlorine into your pool. Otherwise, if the pH is off balance, you may end up with a cloudy and uncomfortable surprise waiting for you in the water
5: Add the mix
Gradually pour the dissolved solution into your pool like a master chemist. First, add half of the bucket and let new water mix with it before pouring again around its perimeter. Remember not to just dump it in one spot and don’t pour it into the skimmer. Let the pump circulate it around.
How to add Chlorine Tablets to a Pool
You can add chlorine tablets to a pool by using a Floating chlorine dispenser or an Automatic chlorinator.
1: Test the water
Determine the chlorine level of your pool water
2: Determine how many tablets needs to be added
Don't guess, read the label! The instructions will tell you exactly how many tablets to add depending on your pool's water volume and chlorine level. Remember, to know how to calculate your pool volume read below.
3: Add the tablets
Using a Floating Chlorine Dispenser:
•Simply insert the tablets into the floating dispenser, push it to the center of your pool, and let it do its thing.
Using an Automatic Chlorinator:
•Turn off the pump
•Turn the pool's chlorinator control valve off and wait a minute for any water or fumes to escape from its feeder
•Take off the chlorinator’s cap by turning it counter-clockwise but don't get too close, it might have fumes inside
•Insert the tablets into the chlorinator feeder and close it
•Turn the pump back on and reset the control valve dial to the required level
How to add Liquid Chlorine to a Pool
1: Test the water
Determine the chlorine level of your pool water
2: Determine how many tablets needs to be added
Don't guess, read the label! The instructions will tell you exactly how many tablets to add depending on your pool's water volume and chlorine level. Remember, to know how to calculate your pool volume read below.
3: Pour the Chlorine
Once you know how much liquid chlorine your pool needs, simply pour it into your pool and let your pump circulate it around. Preferably pour it during the sunset, UV rays may affect its effectiveness.

How to Calculate a Pool Volume
You can calculate it using this simple formula (Length x Width x Average Depth) x 7.48 = Pool Volume in Gallons
By the way, how many HBO series have you watched since the last time you solved a formula?
Steps:
1: Find the average depth of the Pool (For example if the deeper end of the pool is 6 ft and the shallow end is 2 ft, then the average depth is 4 ft)
2: Measure the pool’s length and width
3: Multiply the length by width by the average depth, as a result, we will know the cubic feets
4: Since 1 cubic foot contains 7.48 gallons of water, then multiply the cubic feet of the pool by 7.48
Example:
•Pool length: 30 ft
•Pool width: 20 ft
•Pool average depth: 4 ft (2 ft on the shallow end and 6 ft on the deeper end)
Pool Volume = (Length x Width x Average Depth) x 7.48
PV = (30 x 20 x 4) x 7.48
PV = (600 x 4) x 7.48
PV = 2400 x 7.48
Pool Volume = 17,952 gallons
