Pool Pump Common Troubles & Solutions!

Learn how to troubleshoot common pool pump issues, from power problems to water flow disruptions and unusual sounds, ensuring your pool stays in top condition.

One Minute Read Summary

•Common mistakes with Pool Pumps include “power problems”, “water flow issues” and “unusual sounds”.

•”Power problems” such as turning off after a few seconds or minutes and not turning on at all. Can be caused by overloaded voltage systems, loose connections in wiring, failing capacitor inside the motor itself, and using a breaker instead of a dedicated switch/timer.

•”Water flow issues” problems like basket not filling with water or low water flow due to a dirty filter, clogged basket, or too much air in the system. It could be from a need to prime up the pump, or debris blocking system suction lines or it could also be caused by underground leaks which require professional help.

•”Unusual sounds” such as humming when it doesn't turn on, vibrating sounds, or an avalanche sound could be happening because the impellers need cleaning out, bearings are not lubricated properly, there is an obstruction of some kind within the plumbing lines or the capacitor is busted.

My Pool Pump has power problems

•Why my Pool Pump turns off after a few seconds?

If you're not an electrical expert, this could happen when your voltage system is overloaded, when there may be some loose connections in wiring (which you can check yourself), or even worse, a failing capacitor inside the motor itself. So whether you just installed a brand new pump or are dealing with one that’s been around a while, it is best to hire an electrician who knows their stuff.

•Why my Pool Pump turns off after a few minutes?

If your pool pump randomly turns off after a few minutes of operation, you should check the motor itself - but be careful as it might be hot! This could mean its thermal overload is protecting it from overloading. Alternatively, if you don't use a dedicated switch or timer and have wired directly to the breaker instead then this will wear out faster than usual. Consider asking an electrician about getting a motor starting switch in order to fix this problem once and for all.

•Why my Pool Pump is not turning on?

Is your pool pump giving you the silent treatment? Before jumping in to investigate, check these common areas of trouble. Start by flipping switches, sometimes breakers and timers can accidentally be tripped or set off-schedule. Or maybe something has gone awry with the wires? To find out just turn off that breaker first, then take a look at all electrical connections going from and to your pump!

My Pool Pump has water Flow Problems

•Why is my Pool Pump basket not filling with water?

If the water in your pump basket compartment keeps dropping, all you need to do is prime up your pool pump and check for debris or any damage on its o-ring.

•Why my Pool Pump has a low water flow?

Does your pool pump sound like it's running, but the water flow just isn't there? Simple, something is interrupting its suction or blocking the system! The culprit could be a dirty filter, a clogged basket, or too much air in the skimmer line. First of all, try priming the Pool pump, cleaning the filter, and emptying the skimmer and pump basket. If this doesn’t fix the problem then could be that the lines are licking. Aboveground leaks are easy enough to spot (just look around the pipes coming from the pump). Fixing these doesn't require a professional plumber. But if you find mysterious puddles of water on the ground, you may have yourself an underground leak, and that requires getting some help from experts who know their way around plumbing!

•Why my Pool Pump is sucking air?

Is your Pump taking breaths? Before calling reinforcements, first of all, check that the water level in your Pool is at least half of your skimmer, if not the case then add more water to your pool until reach the level and you notice that the water can easily get into the skimmer. if this is not solving the problem then check:

The Pump: Check that the pump basket is not full of debris, this will block the flow of water through it, if not the case then check if there are bubbles around the pump lid, and check that is properly closed and has an O-ring in place and not damaged.

Skimmer: Check that the skimmer basket is not full of debris as it might stop the flow of water through it, if the basket is empty then make sure that the skimmer door is not stuck and moves freely letting water get to the skimmer.

Plumbing lines and Unions: The problem could be an o-ring failure or a suction side leak in the unions. How can you tell? Create some bubbles from detergent around the joints and couplings, if they start being "sucked" into the lines, then there’s no doubt about it! If nothing suspicious appears though, chances are something is blocking up your intake lines

If your Pump is still sucking air then you need to get professional help.

My Pool Pump is making unusual sounds

•Why my Pool Pump doesn’t turn on and makes humming sounds?

There could be a simple fix, the impeller might just need to be cleaned out. A wire can easily do the trick if that's all that’s wrong, so start fishing around and see what treasures are caught up in there! If this doesn’t fix it then could be a sign that the motor needs a jolt of power to get started, similar to how jumpstarting a car battery works. Your capacitor might be busted and needs to be replaced.

•Why my Pool Pump sounds vibrating?

Loud vibrations could indicate issues with bearings, alignment, or excess air inside. Make sure to check that the pump it's sitting on an even surface, and replace any worn parts if needed, this also can occur when air gets sucked in and the impeller rotates at varying speeds, creating a sound like thunder and shaking up all the plumbing connected. The vibrations can cause damage to components of your pool pumping and filtration system

•Why my Pool Pump is sound like there is an avalanche inside?

That’s your pump screaming for help! Sounds like it needs some water, this means something’s blocking the suction line, be it debris or a leak. Check out those baskets and plumbing lines. This sound could also mean your bearings are no longer lubricated properly, so it's time to call in reinforcements like an experienced repairman!
